food for thought

For the first time in a long time, I ventured out of my comfort zone aka Garden State into a place of everything imaginable aka Big Apple with close girlfriends of mine. Comfortably seated in the backseat of one of my friends' SUV, I was completely relaxed knowing that we were in good hands of our designated skilled driver with a navigation device pre-wired in her brain. For her, crossing the bridge over to the other side of the river is like walking across the street to visit my neighbor for me. Sharing the same space with countless talented and purpose-driven individuals whose passion and pursuit for life are so overwhelmingly infectious, it's hard not to get yourself stimulated intellectually and spiritually from the empowering effects of their mere existence.

周りには素敵な人たちが沢山います。とても幸せなことです。彼女達のお話しを聞いたり、自分の話しを聞いてもらったり、そこには必ず気付きと学びがあります。まだまだ努力せねば！と気付かされることの方が断然多く、それでも自然とハッピーな気持ちでいられることが多くなりました。彼女達の考え方や生き方を学ぶことは、私にとって必要不可欠なfoodです。美味しい物を食べる時に感じる満足感のように、マインドにgood foodを与えると、Mind(Thought)も満たされます。自分のMind(Thought)を意識することが気持ちを変える。You feel what you think. What you think is what you feel.

spring is here (getting there!)

At last! Spring has officially arrived (well, it's getting there!) Although the signs of wintry presence are still tangible, spring is steadily marching its way through all kinds of storms with 'hope' as its guiding light. As the sun shines longer with each day that passes by, mercury keeps rising and so do our energy levels! Soon, what is left of the cold winter will turn into a distant memory, reviving the warmth of spring that will embrace our fatigued souls and awaken our dormant senses. In Spring, we find solace and comfort. In Spring, we feel empowered and reenergized. What comes to your mind when you think of Spring? What feelings arise when you think about the warm season ahead? Rhetorical questions they may be, yet ones that might actually inspire your thoughts to transpire. For starters, following are some words associated with SPRING...

 

 

 

Spring Equinox...春分の日。正式名は、Vernal（春の、春に関連する） Equinox。Equinoxはラテン語でEqual Night、つまり、昼と夜が同じ長さになるという意味です。

Spring Forward... 今年は3月10日から夏時間スタート。米国ではDST(Daylight Saving Time)と呼ばれています。毎年のことなのに、時計の針をどっち方向に1時間動かすせばいいんだっけ？と忘れてしまう人も意外と多い。そんな時に、役立つのがこちらのフレーズです→"Fall Back, Spring Forward"。Fall backは後ろに下がるという意味のあるPhrasal Verbで、Fall＝秋にかけて「秋は1時間戻る」という風に覚えることができます。Spring forwardのSpringはバネという意味もあるので、バネのように跳ぶという意味があり、Spring＝春にかけて「春は一時間跳ばす＝進める」と覚えることができます。

 

Spring Cleaning…春は再生の時期。新しい生命の誕生の象徴でもあります（イエス・キリストの復活＝Easterに深い関係があります。）日本では、大晦日に大掃除をするのが恒例ですが、米国では、春に大掃除をします。会社でも、Spring Cleaning Dayを導入するところがあり、溜まっている書類やオフィスを整理整頓したり、一般家庭では模様替えをしたり、家具を買い換えたり、フロアをきれいにしたりします。お天気も良く気温も暖かくなるので、家中の窓を開けて空気を入れ換えるだけでも気分転換に！

 

Spring Fever…日本で言う五月病のこと。十分睡眠摂っているのに眠気がとれない、集中力や気力の低下など、意識がもうろうとしてしまう傾向が強くなる。Fever＝熱があるときのように、頭がぽわ～んとしてしまって浮かれ騒ぎする人も出て来るそうで、注意が必要ですね！

 

Spring Allergies…花粉症。人によって症状は様々ですが、春に咲く草花のPollen（花粉）に反応してしまう。きれいな季節なのに、エンジョイできないのは残念ですよね～。アロマやヨガ、食生活などナチュラルセラピーを心掛けて、なるべく薬を服用せずに乗り切りたいですね！

 

Spring Break…春休み！殆どの公立学校は大体4月ですが、大学生になると3月＝春休み。日本は、全国今が春休みの時期ですネ！大学生の春休みは一週間がノルマ。海外旅行・国内旅行を満喫する学生が多く、特にビーチ系は大人気。お酒を飲める年齢の学生もいるので（じゃなくても飲む・飲みたい若者は万国共通。若気の至りですね～）浴びるほど飲酒して、ついつい羽目を外してしまう学生も少なくありません。FacebookなどのSocial Network系サイトに面白半分に写真を載せて公開しちゃう、なんてことも耳にするので気をつけましょう！

ちなみに、getting thereの意味は、もう少し！あと少し！

Hello, everybody! Hope this beautiful sunny day is putting a smile on your face today : ) As they say, "March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb!" 『3月は、ライオンのようにやって来て、羊のように出て行く 』と、冬から春に変わる様子を動物に例えて表しています。3月スタート時は、パワフルなライオンの勢いのような嵐が続きますが、4月に近づくにつれ、物静かな羊のように天候が穏やかになる♪

 

Anyway, being a tea lover myself, I've been savoring all kinds of tea flavors lately, mostly herbal & caffeine free (so that I can enjoy them at nighttime.) In my quest to find all things inspirational and ideas for gifts, I came across some teas from Harney & Sons.  Talk about love at first sight! The moment I saw them, I immediately fell in love with their concepts and package designs!  Now, that's what I call my cup of tea (pun intended!) 元々お茶好きですが、最近は特にお茶にはまっている私す。家族やお友達へのギフトにも最適なHarney&Sonのお茶を見付けました。コンセプトもデザインも素敵で、一目惚れ！My cup of teaは、言葉通りの意味もありますが（私のお茶）、イディオム的に「自分の好みや興味があるもの」という意味もあります。Harney & Sonsにご興味ある方は、こちらをどうぞ！

3月突入～！それだけでルンルン気分です♪　もうすぐ春！そして、今年3月でserendipity in the third culture celebrates2周年記念！皆さまのおかげです。皆さまと共に歩み育んで来られたことに、心から感謝しています。ありがとうございます！！！

同時に、帰国や転勤の皆さまとのお別れは、言葉では言い表せないほど切なく心が涙で溢れています・・・。素敵な皆さまに出逢えて、本当に幸せです！皆さんとの想い出は、大切な宝物です。今までありがとうございました！I'll miss each and every one of you! You'll always have a special place in the deepest part of my heart... Take good care of yourselves!  Stay in touch!
